Planning one store versus multiple regional storefronts

Decide between one adapted store, several regional storefronts and independent stores by comparing ownership and operating work.

Use one store with regional settings when a team can manage a largely shared catalogue and shopping journey. Consider multiple regional storefronts when navigation, content, merchandising or operating ownership differs substantially. Compare the ongoing work before treating a separate domain as a separate store.

Define what each option means

A domain, market, storefront channel and independent store are different units. BigCommerce can run multiple storefront websites as channels and sites within one store and catalogue.

Its Catalyst documentation describes regional storefront content and settings, including products, currency, checkout, payment and shipping options. Assess other platforms against these distinctions using their current documentation and a proposed configuration.

Compare three designs: one storefront adapted by market, several storefronts connected to one commerce store, and independent regional stores. A country-specific domain alone does not require the third. Ask vendors to show how URLs, product records, orders and staff accounts relate in the proposed design.

Compare ownership and workload

Decision areaOne shared storefrontMultiple regional storefronts
Product updatesCan staff publish once and apply deliberate market exceptions?Which records and channel assignments are shared?
ContentCan editors adapt enough copy and layout by market?Who maintains each navigation, campaign and translated page?
OrdersCan staff identify the customer's market? Are order messages tied to the originating storefront?
IntegrationsDoes each app respect market context?Does each app support the intended channel or site?
ReleaseCan changes be previewed for each market?Who approves and corrects regional releases?

Assign an owner for each answer.

Check the platform boundary

Shopify Markets is a candidate to assess against required regional product, price, currency, language and URL experiences. Verify in current documentation and a proposed configuration which differences it supports within one store. Check commercial and account requirements in current Shopify documentation.

BigCommerce Multi-Storefront is a candidate to assess for regional storefront content and settings. Its Catalyst documentation lists products, categories and pricing via price lists among the storefront content that can be localised.

BigCommerce advises order integrations to preserve channel context so customer-facing information refers to the right storefront. Confirm that proposed apps and staff workflows do so.

Independent regional stores may be justified by an organisational boundary or a requirement shared models cannot meet. They also add product, integration and support decisions. Ask for an operating estimate for each feasible design.

Use one change scenario

Plan a product launch for Australia and one overseas market while excluding a third. Include a regional price, translated description and customer service update. Trace who edits, approves, previews and corrects each change. Then trace an order and refund through each proposed storefront.

Choose the simplest structure that handles the required differences with clear ownership. Record which future market requirement would make the team revisit that choice.
