Checking payment and currency coverage for Australian merchants
Check payment eligibility for an Australian store and distinguish displayed, charged, order and payout currencies.
Before approving a checkout for an Australian store, check merchant eligibility, the methods a customer can actually select, and the path from displayed price to charge, order and payout currency. A method list alone does not confirm what will appear for a particular customer: WooPayments methods can depend on merchant country, customer region or device.
Build a coverage sheet
Test an Australian buyer paying in AUD and each overseas destination the store plans to serve. Record the displayed price, selected payment method, charge currency, order currency and payout currency separately; add the refund route when overseas payments matter.
Scenario / Record before comparing providers
- Australian buyer
- Payment method, AUD amount shown and charged, delivery address
- Overseas buyer
- Customer location, method eligibility, displayed and charged currency
- Accelerated checkout
- Device and wallet conditions; whether essential order fields arrive
- Refund
- Customer refund currency and amount; where staff issue it
- Operations
- Gateway, order identifier, payout currency and exception owner
Mark each method documented, configured or shown in the proposed checkout. Do not treat these as the same level of evidence.
For WooCommerce, each store has one base currency, which is displayed through the store and is the currency in which the merchant is paid. Changing the base currency changes the displayed and charged currency but does not convert product-price numbers; earlier orders keep their original currency and totals.
WooPayments multi-currency lets customers select an enabled currency and buy in it, but enabling the feature does not enable payouts in multiple currencies. WooPayments supports payments in over 100 currencies; the enabled-currency list starts with the store’s default currency, and the merchant selects any additions from the supported list.
Checkout Currency Flow for Australian Merchants
- Set Base CurrencyStore base currency is displayed and used for payouts. Changing it affects display and charge but not existing order currencies.
- Enable Multi-Currency (Optional)Customers can select from enabled currencies. Only the store’s default currency is paid out unless multi-currency payouts are configured.
- Customer Selects CurrencyGeolocation may auto-switch to customer’s local currency if enabled. Inaccurate with VPN use.
- Charge CurrencyCharged in selected currency. Conversion applied if different from base currency.
- Order CurrencyRecorded as charged amount. May differ from payout if conversion occurs.
- Payout CurrencyDefault is base currency. Multi-currency payouts require separate setup.
- Refund RouteRefunds issued in same currency as original charge. Staff must confirm refund method and destination.
Compare relevant routes
Shopify: Inspect the Australian method list in Payment methods with Shopify Payments in Australia. For international payments and local pricing, check Payments and Primary gateways for international and local pricing support against the intended checkout route.
WooPayments eligibility: Australia is a supported account country. For a business account, the relevant country is where the business is registered, not where its owner lives.
WooPayments cards: Visa and Mastercard are listed for merchants and cards from any country. American Express excludes UAE merchants and cards issued in India; Discover and Diners Club exclude Australian merchants; China UnionPay excludes merchants in Japan and the UAE; JCB excludes UAE merchants; Cartes Bancaires requires a France-issued card and a merchant outside the UAE.
eftpos Australia is available only to merchants in Australia when the card was issued in Australia. The WooPayments account-country table lists Afterpay for Australia, but not Affirm or Klarna.
WooPayments lists Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link by Stripe and WooPay as built-in express checkout methods. Check the intended device and checkout, since some methods are available only in certain countries or regions and others only on certain devices.

Check the customer-facing result
Local payment methods are shown only to customers in eligible regions or countries. Check the shopper’s country and device in the proposed checkout, and compare the merchant country and card-issuing country with WooPayments’ card restrictions before marking a method as available.
With WooPayments multi-currency, customers can select from currencies the merchant has enabled; automatic switching can use customer geolocation when that currency is enabled for the customer’s country. Geolocation can be inaccurate, including when a customer uses a VPN.
Run a configuration-specific checkout test for each required shopper route. Confirm the method appears and record the displayed, selected, charged, order and payout currencies; check the refund route and current account terms for processing, conversion, refunds and payouts.
